Week Summary - BA3a Week 1

3D Model Project

For this project, I've decided to work on something that's going to expand my skills into other areas. I've been considering potential jobs I might look for after I graduate, and one that often comes up is the role of character artist, 2D or 3D. In light of this, I chose to do a project that will take me through the whole character design pipeline, from the initial concept to a finished model, with the focus being mainly on the 3D aspects, as they're the ones I'm most unfamiliar with. Below is my proposal presentation.

My poly budget was informed by the budgets for the Overwatch in-game character models. I think this timeline is a good estimate for the project, and leaves me enough time to run over if my estimate is off. As mentioned above, I'm aiming for a mix of gothic and sci-fi styles, taking a lot of inspiration from Bloodborne and Dishonored, particularly figures like the hunter and the outsider. My starting point is 'the grim reaper,' and I'm looking at creating a lonely, mysterious figure like the aforementioned characters.

Life drawing

This life drawing class started out with two longer poses from the outset, which after not doing any observational drawing was a little difficult. I decided to use the time to focus on tone and form instead of my usual gestural studies, using charcoal and later incorporating chalk in addition.

I think the pieces turned out well, though I'll need to warm up to life drawing again. I like the volume on the back section on the first piece despite much of it being unfinished, and the perspective on the second, as my relaxed poses often suffer in that area - the foot is a little small as I had to rush it towards the end, but the majority of the drawing is in good proportion, I think. I need to work on being faster in future sessions to avoid having to rush.
