Colour Theory Task
Image 1:
This image
makes use of a soft blue-green analogous colour scheme, using fairly
desaturated colours. There are some subtle warm tonal greys in some sections of
the armour, but the image mostly adheres to this very limited palette, mostly
green with blue as an accent for elements like the wings. In terms of value,
the majority of the figure is quite dark, with lighter highlights picking out
the armour detail, and contrasting the light, saturated wings against the
darker and more desaturated bow. The face is also very light in value compared
to the rest of the image, which helps to draw attention to it and also balances
the darkness of the armour.
Image 2:
This image
uses a monochromatic palette similar in hue to the one above, but much more
desaturated, being made up almost entirely of cool tonal greys. Detail is
expressed through value, with the dark figure here contrasting heavily against
the very light background elements. The artist uses areas of contrast to
suggest detail, such as the light reflected on the water in the midground, the
rough shapes of leaves in the foreground, and the bright white, craggy shapes
in the background which suggest one plane of a larger rock face.
Image 3:
This image
combines two analogous palettes (yellow-orange-red and blue-green) into a heavily
saturated complementary palette. There is a strong diagonal colour divide from
the bottom left to top right corner of the image, with small sections of the complementing
palette accenting the dominating palette of each half. In terms of value, the
lightest values are in the sections where the artist wants to draw the viewer’s
focus – the figure in the mech – whereas the rest of the image is fairly muddy
in terms of value, but this is made up for by the strong contrast in palette.
